Joseph Artioli in this framework has the vegetables just on a shelf of stone, like an ancient Pompeian fresco, making them emerge from the background thanks to the clever use of light.

These vegetables depicted under: cabbage, onion and carrot. All food basis of nutrition of the Romans. The cabbage was considered a miraculous plant by the Romans for its healing power and its beneficial effects and togheter with the onion was the main food of ships’ crews; as well as the spelled was the food of legionnaries.

As a recipe to combine with this picture, I have chosen:

Spelt with vegetables and soy sauce

380 g of pearl barley

250 g of cabbage

1 onion

1 celery

1 carrot

1 clove of garlic

1 tablespoon soy sauce

extra virgin olive oil
